John McCrary, the Instructor at Hurricane Creek Park has over 18 years experience in climbing & mountaineering. He has worked extensively with youth groups and is dedicated to introducing new comers to the sport. He has been trained by The American Mountain Guides Association and is Certified by the Boy Scout of America as a Troop Leader Instructor. He is also certified in Red Cross First Aid & CPR.
For 41 years, rock climbing has been off limits in Hurricane Creek Park, but recently the former owner William “Buddy” Rodgers donated the beautiful canyon to the State of Alabama. The Cullman City Parks and Recreation gratefully accepted the local responsibility of operation.
Park manager John Wesley McCrary is a professional climbing instructor and guide and has been working toward developing the climbing program and many routes for group training such as Boy Scouts of America and local church organizations. After the initial easy to moderate centrally located climbs and rappels were established, John began to move on to the more difficult and challenging areas of the park. There are many overhanging roof shelters that will have very hard Sport Routes set up; the canyon seems to be very well suited for numerous Bolted climbs.
Most climbing areas that have Bolted Sport Routes have a starting difficulty level too high for beginner to novice Sport climbers; HCP is developing many easy Bolted Routes with this in mind. So if you are just getting started or are a seasoned Sport climber you will be able to find something here. All Top Rope Routes and Rappel spots are bolted with stainless anchors and you are required to use them; do not use the trees unless you are on new routes. HCP is still at the beginning of its development and new routes are encouraged; the manager has a policy of giving credit to all persons who put up new routes, no matter how easy or novice they may be. Report all First Ascents to the office for documentation.
Hurricane Creek Park offers several Rock Climbing courses that range from the beginner “My First Time Rock Climbing” trips to the more advanced Tope Rope Rigging and Sport Climbing classes to improve your all around climbing abilities. HCP uses only Certified Professional Instructors.
