HURRICANE CREEK PARK JOINS NORTH ALABAMA BIRDING TRAIL

Cullman City Parks and Recreation's newest facility, Hurricane Creek Park, was accepted on October 27, 2003, as an official site on the North Alabama Birding Trail.

The North Alabama Birding Trail is a program developed by the State of Alabama's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries' Nongame Wildlife Program.  The trail will include approximately 50 diverse sites in North Alabama.  During it's evaluation, Hurricane Creek Park rated high in each category--Bird Watching Characteristics, Ecological Significance, Site Resiliency, Physical and Legal Access, Economic Significance, Maintenance Support, and Site Safety.

The presence of a birding trail in North Alabama is expected to provide visitors and residents alike with a quality outdoor birding experience, from both a recreational and educational standpoint.  Similar trails in other parts of the country have helped areas to take important strides in bird conservation.  Birding trails are also shown to have made significant economic contributions to local communities.

"We are excited about the announcement of Hurricane Creek Park's acceptance on the North Alabama Birding Trail," said John Hunt, Director of the Cullman City Parks and Recreation Department.  "When we took over management of Hurricane Creek Park in May 2003, we made a commitment to establishing the park as a great outdoor recreation area.  Being placed on the Trail is a step towards the completion of that goal."
